CerriReviews: Front Page News by L.K. Campbell

Front Page News by L.K. Campbell
ASIN: B002C75J00

Jess McElroy is forced by an untenable situation with her former employer to start over and takes a position with a larger, regional newspaper. The new job comes with some adjustments, but she is determined to make it work, however it seems someone isn't happy with Jess.

At first the episodes seemed like little more than bad luck; a driver almost sideswiping her, a flat tire, a few harassing phone calls, but when things escalate, Jess must find out who is behind the cruel and dangerous harassment.

Her ex-boyfriend and ex-boss Joe is a likely culprit, but is he the one trying to harm her? For a woman who didn't think she had a single enemy, life is getting scary. With no one left to turn to that she knows she can trust, Jess takes a chance on her new boss, Parker Montgomery. Parker has his own secrets and enemies. But will the danger they share cause the sparks between them to ignite?

Ms. Campbell writes from knowledge, using her newspaper background as setting in this sweet yet spicy romance. The author's authentic southern voice is reflected throughout the tale, adding an extra layer of nuance.

Jess McElroy is an everywoman, easily recognizable. Readers can step into her shoes and see through her eyes, making the terror she feels when events spiral out of control all the more believable.

In summary, Front Page News is a tasty story with just enough spice to keep it interesting without burning your tongue.

Irish Eyes Are Smilin' For Author Ken Bruen

LONDON BOULEVARD is filming as we speak (with Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley) , ONCE WERE COPS optioned too, BLITZ about to be filmed next month, and I understand that the Jack Taylor novels are heading for the screen as well: series for TV.

As my friend Dusty Rhoades (JD Rhoades) says, “I am extremely happy about this. Ken's an amazing writer and a great guy, and I would love to see him get the recognition he deserves AND get absolutely filthy stinking rich. This might do it.”

The Blitz movie

According to Crime Spree Cinema, Jason Statham has joined the film adaptation of author Ken Bruen's popular novel Blitz. He will be playing Brant, a crude, un-PC, borderline sociopath cop. Paddy Considine has joined the film as well, playing Sergeant Porter Nash, an openly gay cop that must work with the homophobic Brant.

Here is the synopsis: The South East London police squad are down and out. Detective Sergeant Brant is in hot water for assaulting a police shrink, Chief Inspector Roberts' wife has died in a horrific car accident, and WPC Falls is still figuring out how to navigate her job as a black female investigator in the notorious unit. When a serial killer takes his show on the road, things get worse for all three. Nicknamed "The Blitz" by the rabid London media, the killer is aiming for tabloid immortality by killing cops in different beats around the city.

Blitz will be released in 2010.
About the casting choice, author Bruen stated, "I think Jason Statham will really step up to the plate for Brant. He's been looking for a part to make his own and I think this is it." Filming starts this August.

Congratulations, Ken!

Readers In A Slump?

Are you in a reading slump? So many of the people I talk to seem to be. Why? Do you feel there is a glut in the market? Plots and premises all sound the same? Or maybe the economy is the culprit?

I know my own book buying has diminished somewhat due to the economy.

I was at Borders last weekend and bumped into Tonya, a very friendly reader with a penchant for mysteries. We chatted as we sat at nearby tables and discovered we both had a passion for certain authors. As I eyed her pile of books, she remarked that she hated to choose, and said that for her, the economy is the biggest reason she is forced to pare down her reading. She used to spend an hour or two browsing the shelves and would average purchasing three or more books every visit. Now she usually buys just one and her return trips have decreased as well.

"I used to come in here sometimes twice a month. But now it's like a special treat when I come in. This is my first trip back since April. I remember not that long ago I would buy all of these books and not think about it, but now I have to skim them, and make decisions which one I'll carry up to the register."

When asked what prompted her current visit, she remarked that she got a Borders Rewards coupon notice in her email. I showed her my own coupon from Borders. Yep. Those coupons sucked us in.

So which lucky book did she take home with her? Die For You by Lisa Unger.
As for me, I grabbed Deidre Knight's Red Kiss and Whacked by Jules Asner.

What about you? Have your book buying habits changed?
